Find something boring in your business – an error page on your website, a thank-you-for-your-order email, Twitter bio, whatever – and liven it up. Make it funny or unexpected or stimulating.
For example, on an error page, instead of the default:
The page cannot be found. The page you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.
You might say somethin’ random, as I do on Millyuns:
You look lost. You came for a page that didn’t send for you. Maybe you should return to the home page and get your bearings, bro.
Or on an order confirmation, instead of emailing the usual:
Thank you. Your order is complete. Your reference number is 105332. Below, you will find a complete summary as well as tracking information. Please note: it may take 24 hours before your tracking becomes available.
You could write something funny:
High five! Awesome choice. Like Steven-Seagal-ponytail awesome. We’ll get it shipped out pronto. In the meantime, if ya need anything, hit us on our hitter: 1-800-GIGGLES.
Or instead of a Twitter profile that sounds like a robot wrote it:
Digital marketing expert dedicated to delivering high-ROI services to each and every client.
I dunno, maybe be a bit more human:
Husband, father of two, paper cut survivor, not to toot my own horn, but I market like a mofo.
This simple exercise will make a big difference. Sure, there’s lots of competition, but everyone’s so painfully plain, standing out’s a piece of piss. Assuming you’ve got five minutes.
