Joel Kaplan Atlas Digital On Scaling Your FB Agency

Official Joel Kaplan Insta

Entrepreneur Joel Kaplan from Start Or Scale talks about how to grow your Facebook advertising agency. Here’s some of his top tips and deepest reflections.

“When everyone zigs, zag.”

“Today, I have more than 30 team members. I run two, 7-figure businesses. I get to coach 100s of amazing entrepreneurs every day. And most importantly, I get to realize my life’s purpose of helping people accomplish their full potential. The point of all this is simple: ⁣when you do the boring work, over and over again… and continue to show up… and continue giving it your all… and doing whatever you need to do to get to wherever you want to go… you get there.”

“If you aren’t willing to struggle through the downside of business (discipline, hard work, tough times, constant personal growth), you haven’t earned the right to reap the rewards from the upside (freedom, money, impact).”

“Every single person with massive success has adopted a ‘burn the ships’ mentality and swings the f*cking bat.⁣ For example:⁣ everyone thought the guy who originally purchased the UFC for two million dollars was crazy (Dana White). After being over 30 million in the red and almost filing for bankruptcy, he kept pushing forward. They put everything on the line for that deal. If it failed, he would have lost everything. But he took on the risk and swung the bat. Now, Dana White is worth over $350 million dollars.⁣ Many years later, everyone thought the guy who purchased the UFC for $4 billion from Dana White (the guy above) was way f*cking crazier.⁣ Just like Dana, he put everything on the line for that deal. But now there was so much more at risk. His money, his investor’s money. He even leveraged his existing businesses to raise that much capital. If it failed, he would have truly lost everything. But he saw someone else’s ‘risk’ as his opportunity and swung the bat. Now, the UFC is worth about $10 billion.⁣ Point is, burn the ships and swing the f*cking bat.”

“Investing into yourself is not only one of the foundational things you have to do to begin performing at a high level, but the first of three very important steps into building the life you want, full of both fulfillment and influence. First, is yourself. You must allocate money, time, and energy purely into yourself, to in-turn make yourself significantly more valuable. Books, podcasts, courses, seminars, and even things like meditation are all things you can invest into for the sake of bettering yourself. This is the most crucial stage because you begin to develop a new mindset and paradigm as to how you approach everything. Secondly, investing into sales and marketing. Once you’ve established and made yourself valuable, it’s your duty to show the world what you’re capable of. At this point it’s an extreme disservice if you have a product or service that can help others, but you’re not working to share it with others. Lastly, investing into your team and infrastructure. Once you have a solid foundation of knowledge, losing the employee mindset, and embracing that you’re a high performance beast, it’s time to lead others and create a team of individuals who aspire to achieve and hit the same goals you have.”

“The truth is, everyone f*cks up. Humans are inherently flawed (even the best leaders). So it’s not about not making mistakes. It’s about how we grow from them.”

“When I first started [online], I was stressed out of my mind wondering where our next client was going to come from.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ I’d stay up all night with insomnia worried about whether or not this whole thing was going to work out.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ The excitement that I had when I set out to become an entrepreneur faded. Guess there was a limit on how long I could:⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ (1) Spend hours in ads manager trying to get my clients the best results⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣; (2) Talk to clients all day long by myself⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣; (3) Obsessively send cold emails or cold call in order to land that next new clients⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣. I literally stopped doing everything that didn’t involve business⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣: (1) Not taking care of myself; (2) Sh*tty sleep, sh*tty diet, sh*tty workouts, sh*tty mindset⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣. I almost quit.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ Even applied for a job and to ‘stand out’ I went as far as to make a video (LOL). But I’m grateful I didn’t get the job. I thank the universe for that rejection. Because today, I got to go snowboarding all day while my systems and teams are scaling my 7-figure businesses without me. And I’m super grateful. For trusting myself and taking the leap two years ago to follow my dreams and start my business.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ For my mission to make money, and make a difference, which I know will lead me to change the world.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ And most importantly for my amazing team, who makes all of this possible. Days like this are what life is all about. So I hope this inspires you to live life on your our terms and to start creating your own destiny.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣”

“My biggest when of 2019? I launched one of the best agency coaching programs on the planet. Which allowed me to:⁣ (1) Help five amazing entrepreneurs hit 7-figures and help countless more hit 6-figures.⁣ And most importantly, build the most amazing community of genuine like-minded entrepreneurs who have a big heart, a huge vision, and want to make money and make a difference. My biggest win of 2020? Me and my team will cross the goal of $1 million/month.⁣ In order to make that happen, we are going to launch a new revolutionary podcast for agencies, help 100s of amazing new students scale to 6- and 7-figures, and build the greatest entrepreneur community of all time. And along the way, I will launch one of my biggest dreams: a nonprofit initiative to help high school students learn entrepreneurship and all of its amazing lessons.”

“Always strive for more, but not at the expense of loving yourself.
In this world of entrepreneurship, we are always told to: push harder, hustle and grind, never be satisfied.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ And that’s very powerful. But we must be extremely careful with that power. Because if we don’t harness it properly, we will start feeling like we are never enough. And that’s deadly. Because we will stop loving ourselves. And if we can’t love ourselves on this journey, then what’s even the point of all this?⁣⁣⁣⁣ If I ‘always strive for more’… at the expense of loving myself, then I have lost. In order to win, we must find coexistence between the pressure of needing to be better and also being grateful with where we are, even if we are not perfect and even if we haven’t reached all of our goals. Because the truth is, we’ll never be perfect. And we’ll never ‘finish’ hitting our goals. So we must learn to accept that truth and also learn to accept and love ourselves at the same time. So, I’m not saying don’t strive for more. On the contrary. I believe you always should. Just not at the expense of loving yourself on that journey of growth.”

“I woke up this morning to a nasty comment on my ads. And it got me thinking about haters. Here’s my two cents: I practice the ‘1/3 Rule.’ Iforgot where I learned this principle. I know I read it somewhere. But essentially, it boils to down to this simple belief:⁣ 1/3 people will love you⁣; 1/3 will be neutral with you⁣; 1/3 people will hate you⁣. With that in mind:⁣ if you aren’t being your true self,⁣ and expressing your full self with the world,⁣ you won’t have any haters… because you are trying to please everyone.⁣ And you’ll probably still end up with some haters anyways. So haters are actually a good thing.⁣ They are a sign that you are being your true self.⁣ And expressing that self with the world.⁣ So next time you get a hater,⁣ smile.⁣ Laugh.⁣ And continue doing you.”

“Lean into fear, and learn to love the discomfort.⁣ Because on your path to growing your business to 6-, 7-, and 8-figures, you will need to get uncomfortable.⁣ And you will have to do things that force you to level up.⁣ So do the things that scare you the most and you will become sharper, smarter, and faster than ever.⁣”

“Learn to love getting punched in the face.⁣⁣⁣ Learn to love punching back even harder.⁣⁣⁣ And nothing will ever stop you.”

“Everyone always gets this wrong… I guess maybe it’s because I don’t share it openly… but at the end of the day,⁣ when all is said and done, I don’t want to be known for how much money I make.⁣ I want to be known for the impact I have in this world. Making money is cool and all.⁣ But for me, it all comes down to:⁣ (1) Helping people; (2) Changing lives; (3) Making a difference.⁣ So when you watch me shouting,⁣ at the top of my lungs, about all the money I make… and all the money my students make… know that deep-down,⁣ it’s all about making a difference. As Andrew Carnegie famously said,⁣ ‘I spent the first half of my life making money… and the second half of my life giving it away.’ I truly believe that to solve the biggest problems,⁣ you need to be making as much money as possible.⁣ Money is energy.⁣ Money is power.⁣ Money is connection.⁣ And without it, it is very difficult to scale impact.⁣ So the goal is simple.⁣ Get as rich as humanly possible.⁣ But you must do it with the right intentions. With a good heart.⁣ And with a desire to change the world.⁣ That’s why I’m here.⁣ And that’s why I do what I do.⁣ So, I just wrapped up my first 7-Figure Agency mastermind event.⁣ We rented out one of the biggest mansions in Colorado.⁣ And spent three full days together:⁣ game planning and masterminding; laughing and having a good time; and building amazing relationships.⁣ These events are something that I do for all my students in my coaching program.⁣ And I don’t charge a dime to attend.⁣ I do this to bring us all together.⁣ And build the greatest community of agency owners on the planet.⁣ So with that in mind, I want to thank all of my amazing students who came out to the Denver mastermind.⁣ I am grateful for all of you.⁣ You are all about to blow up… and build massive wealth. Just don’t forget to:⁣ make money… and make a difference.”
